Weekly Running Roundup. 6/12 — 6/18

Inside Passage Running’s Weekly Roundup

Welcome to the first installment of our Weekly Running Roundup. As of this writing the segment will focus primarily on Juneau, but as we recruit reporters from additional communities along the Inside Passage the scope of the Weekly Roundup will grow.

Juneau Area –

The first of Geoff Roses’ Alaska Mountain Ultrarunning Camps was held this week. Campers spent the week cruising the trails through conditions that would have had any Alaskan thing of Hawaii. They pushed through driving half frozen rain and had to dodge a snowflake or two! All in all it appeared that even as mother nature dished it out on these unsuspecting runners the first session of camp was a success, they even mustered the energy to race the locals at Thursday night’s the East Glacier Trail Tangle. http://akultracamp.blogspot.com/

There was an NAO Cup event this week, the East Glacier Trail Tangle. Competitors had the opportunity to race the short course, 1 mile or the Long course “6.7” miles. Both races shared the same start finish line with long race continuing from Under Thunder Trail Head to East Glacier Trail before looping back to the start. The top three Men’s in the 6.7 mile race were Allan Spangler 43:03, Josh Musson 43:29, and Geoff Roses 49:48. Top three women were Amie Spieth 55:16, Naomi Welling 59:39, and April Rezended 1:04:46. Only five runner competed in the 1 mile, first was Mallory Wellington 8:09, followed by Craig Thorsteinson 8:48, and Kirk Thorsteinson. While there was no NAO Cup event over the weekend, the sun came out on Father’s Day and treated Juneau Runners to some fantastic conditions for Trail Running. A number of people took the opportunity to traverse the Juneau Ridge, braving  fresh snow cover left from the chilly week of stormy weather. https://www.strava.com/activities/1043914445
